Chihuahuas (Definite Introduction)
Physical characteristics
Chihuahuas are available in cream, red, brown, black with tawny colors. The hair of short-haired species is soft. Long-haired species have hair on their ears, hands, feet, and tail, and the hair on their body is not as long as the ground. Long-haired Chihuahuas are more sensitive to the cold. Common colors are: light brown, maroon or white.
The best head is a round "apple-shaped" head. Beautiful face. The eyes are large but not oversized, even, preferably translucent black or red (yellow or white dogs are allowed to have white eyes). The ears are large and erect, and remain erect when alert. However, when resting, the ears will open and the angle between the two ears will be 45 degrees. The tone is short and slightly pointed. The nose colors of black, blue and chocolate varieties are consistent with their own body colors. Yellowish varieties are allowed to have pink noses. Scissor bite or pincer bite. An overshot upper jaw or an overshot lower jaw is a serious fault.
The neck is slightly curved and perfectly integrated with the shoulders. Topline level. The rounded ribs support the chest and make the body rich and powerful (but do not create a barrel chest). The tail is of medium length, held high in a sickle shape or outward, or rolled on the back, with the tip of the tail just touching the back (never sandwiched between the legs). A short tail is probably not good for docking. The shoulders of the forelimbs are narrow and gradually widen downwards. The front legs are straight so that the movement of the elbows is not restricted. The shoulders should be forward, smooth and firm, sloping toward the back (the shoulders should not be down or too low). Broad chest and well-developed forequarters, but by no means a "bulldog" chest. The feet are slender, the toes are well spaced on the beautiful little feet, but they cannot be too separated, and the pads are thick (not like rabbit feet or cat feet). The ankles are slender.
Hind limb muscles are healthy, well spaced, neither too far in or too far out, looking down, healthy and firm. The feet share the forelimbs. The ideal condition is: feathering on the feet and legs, shorts on the hind legs, and a fur collar on the neck. If the coat of the long-haired type is sparse and nearly naked, it is considered undesirable.
The quality of the short-haired coat is very soft, dense and smooth (an undercoat is allowed when the amount of hair is large enough). It is good to have a coat that covers the dog's body and a fur collar and tail. The hair on the head and ears is sparse. The hair on the tail resembles the appearance. The long-haired coat is soft in quality, flat or slightly curved, and preferably has an undercoat. There is feathering on the edges of the ears (if the ears are thin and have more feathers, the ears may tilt forward slightly, but never downward). The tail is full and long (feathery). The ideal condition is: fur on the feet and legs, shorts on the back, and a fur collar on the neck. Disqualification for long-haired types: sparse coat, nearly naked
